Alright, general first impressions of Tales of Luminaria. I have played chapter 1 of Leo's story, did one of the raid boss things, and cleared daily missions.

First off, very easy rereolling. Just download everything at first, grab the currency from the present box, and roll the gacha. Delete the account if you're not satisfied. Rinse and repeat. Easy rerolling is always welcome.

First thing I notice is that the UI is really overwhelming at first. It's not bad to look at, but it's not really easy at first to know what things are or where to go. It seems to be kind of designed after social media apps in its presentation. I don't know if it's my device that's causing this issue but the menus run really slow and laggy. This might vary depending on device.

For the actual gameplay, the portrait mode does NO FAVORS for the combat. It's like Tales of the Rays, but portrait mode, and worse. You can't change the camera angle and frequently during mob fights, a monster will suddenly ambush you from the side because you could never see them coming. I also haven't noticed any way to change who to target so it felt like I was at the mercy of the game deciding who to aim at. Overall felt clunky and weird. Between fights you run around a big and rather empty map gathering items and having scenes where you talk with characters. I wasn't a fan of how long it took to traverse the map. For some reason, the game ran better during gameplay than the menus lol

In terms of the story/writing, it looks like some characters definitely are written better than others. I saw Yelsy's story from a stream and that was much more enjoyable. Leo's was pretty generic and there was literally a scene where a lore dump was really badly written because apparently Leo was too dumb to remember anything in his life and his childhood friends had to explain shit to him.

Overall, it's a really mixed bag. It feels like a Tales game in name only, like they slapped the Tales title on it to sell it better. Try it out if you're interested to decide your feelings. I give it a 3/5.

I think people are being a little too harsh on it, if it wasn't a tales game it would get more positive reviews. let's be realistic here- the graphics exceeded my expectations, imo way better than Tales Of Arise and Tales Of Crestoria. I comparable to the Naruto Ultimate Ninja games which graphics I always enjoyed. The gameplay isnt anything groundbreaking, but it plays very smooth and the mechanics are basically ToA simplified and easy to pick up. The gacha system, well, its a mobile game, but it seems very F2P friendly so far. Not too grindy at all it seems like. Its basically all in the equips and outfits, every character is unlocked when you get to their chapter. Story is kind of whatever so far, not as interesting as ToA but I only completed Ch 1. All in all, for what it is, it is a breath of fresh air for mobile games, Tales of games, and JRPGs in recent years. Give it a go! Thanks!
